  1.                               Styles for 
  2.                    JOURNAL OF GEOPHYSICAL RESEARCH 
  3.                                  and 
  4.                      GEOPHYSICAL RESEARCH LETTERS
  5. These styles have developed over many years of actual usage at my
  6. institute through constructive interaction with the AGU copy editors.
  7. That is, they demand something ridiculous, I then curse all copy
  8. editors and then include this new demand in the styles.
  9. (I have now been informed by the AGU office that they are indeed coming
  10. out with their own, official styles, something I have been telling them
  11. to do for years. This will then make these styles obsolete (the entire
  12. format is to be changed) but until then they are still of use. Demand is
  13. high, I have discovered.)
  14. Features of these styles:
  15.   - contains the latest (beginning 1993) requirements of AGU copy
  16.     editors including the supplemental abstract for JGR and figure
  17.     captions in two sizes.
  18.   - Three output formats are possible:
  19.        1. Camera-ready, the final form, either 9/11 pt or enlarged
  20.              11/13 pt for greater resolution (in the latter case, the
  21.              column width is also magnified as required for later
  22.              reduction).
  23.        2. Manuscript, as double spaced, wide column, in any of the
  24.              standard LaTeX sizes of 10, 11, 12pt. Paper size either
  25.              8.5x11" or A4.
  26.        3. Preprint format, which is two-column, with figures and
  27.              tables included within the text and not at the end. This
  28.              is not for AGU, but for the author to see how the final
  29.              result should look like. (And for GRL, to see if the 4
  30.              page limit is really achieved.)
  31.      All three formats can be created from the same source file by
  32.      selecting appropriate options in \documentstyle. No other changes
  33.      need be made in the text.
  34.   - BibTeX is supported with the accompanying bibliography style file
  35.     agu.bst in such a way that both modes of citation are possible:
  36.         Daly et al. [1993]  or [Daly et al. 1993]
  37.         
  38.   - A plate environment is included analogous to figure.
  39.   - Tables and figure/plate captions are given in the text where they
  40.     are to appear ultimately; however, a marginal note only appears in
  41.     the camera-ready and manuscript versions and the captions are
  42.     automatically collected and printed at the end, as are the tables.
  43.     Each caption is printed in two widths as JGR now requires.
  44.   - subnumbering of equations, figures, etc is possible 
  45.     (eg 4a, 4b ...)
  46. Instructions for the use of these styles are given in files JGRMAN.TEX
  47. (a detailed manual) and GUIDE.TEX (an abbreviated summary), both of
  48. which need to be latex'd and outputted to be read. The sample document
  49. SAMJGR.TEX demonstrates all features by example.

  70. The two sty files have been extracted from the source file art-agu.doc
  71. using Frank Mittelbach's docstrip.tex `program' (version 2.1e). The
  72. art-agu.doc file cannot be used on its own since it contains
  73. `optional' text where jgr and grl differ, and this text is commented
  74. out in such a way that docstrip includes it. However, the comments in
  75. art-agu.doc are still readable.
  76. If you have docstrip.tex yourself, then you can tex (or latex) the
  77. file makesty.tex to produce art-jgr.sty and art-grl.sty on your own.
