Styles for
JOURNAL OF GEOPHYSICAL RESEARCH
and
GEOPHYSICAL RESEARCH LETTERS
These styles have developed over many years of actual usage at my
institute through constructive interaction with the AGU copy editors.
That is, they demand something ridiculous, I then curse all copy
editors and then include this new demand in the styles.
(I have now been informed by the AGU office that they are indeed coming
out with their own, official styles, something I have been telling them
to do for years. This will then make these styles obsolete (the entire
format is to be changed) but until then they are still of use. Demand is
high, I have discovered.)
Features of these styles:
- contains the latest (beginning 1993) requirements of AGU copy
editors including the supplemental abstract for JGR and figure
captions in two sizes.
- Three output formats are possible:
1. Camera-ready, the final form, either 9/11 pt or enlarged
11/13 pt for greater resolution (in the latter case, the
column width is also magnified as required for later
reduction).
2. Manuscript, as double spaced, wide column, in any of the
standard LaTeX sizes of 10, 11, 12pt. Paper size either
8.5x11" or A4.
3. Preprint format, which is two-column, with figures and
tables included within the text and not at the end. This
is not for AGU, but for the author to see how the final
result should look like. (And for GRL, to see if the 4
page limit is really achieved.)
All three formats can be created from the same source file by
selecting appropriate options in \documentstyle. No other changes
need be made in the text.
- BibTeX is supported with the accompanying bibliography style file
agu.bst in such a way that both modes of citation are possible:
Daly et al. [1993] or [Daly et al. 1993]
- A plate environment is included analogous to figure.
- Tables and figure/plate captions are given in the text where they
are to appear ultimately; however, a marginal note only appears in
the camera-ready and manuscript versions and the captions are
automatically collected and printed at the end, as are the tables.
Each caption is printed in two widths as JGR now requires.
- subnumbering of equations, figures, etc is possible
(eg 4a, 4b ...)
Instructions for the use of these styles are given in files JGRMAN.TEX
(a detailed manual) and GUIDE.TEX (an abbreviated summary), both of
which need to be latex'd and outputted to be read. The sample document
SAMJGR.TEX demonstrates all features by example.

guide.tex Source text for this Guide
jgrman.tex A manual for the JGR and GRL styles
keylist.bst Bibliography style definition for keylist
keylist.tex A LaTeX file to print out a bibliographic data base
with keys
makesty.tex A driver file to use with docstrip that generates the
two sty files from the source art-agu.doc file
samjgr.tex Sample text file, may have options changed for other
outputs
sample.bib Bibliography data base for the samples
read.me This file
The two sty files have been extracted from the source file art-agu.doc
using Frank Mittelbach's docstrip.tex `program' (version 2.1e). The
art-agu.doc file cannot be used on its own since it contains
`optional' text where jgr and grl differ, and this text is commented
out in such a way that docstrip includes it. However, the comments in
art-agu.doc are still readable.
If you have docstrip.tex yourself, then you can tex (or latex) the
file makesty.tex to produce art-jgr.sty and art-grl.sty on your own.
